Garden of the Gods was closed during the wildfire because the fire was right on the other side of the ridge. The park opened on Monday and we went on Tuesday. As we drove in, our eyes were peeled for fire damage among the huge red rocks but thankfully the fire never crested the ridge.

We had been telling Karsten that he was going to climb mountains and he was so excited. When we started to see them out the window, he kept asking if THAT was the mountain we were going to climb.
We headed out in the morning so it wasn't as hot, but we still slathered on the sunscreen and got Karsten to wear his hat. By the time I took this picture, Karsten was tired of waiting for the stroller packing and sunscreen application - he wanted to climb a mountain!!
So off we went!
WOW, those mountains are big!
Liam had fun playing with his hat - I don't know how many times I rescued it when he tossed it out the stroller.
It was a beautiful stroll.
Do you see Scott and Karsten in the crevice of the rock?
Next time we go to Garden of the Gods, Liam willl enjoy it more. We debated if I should carry him in the Baby Bjorn but opted for the stroller because it was so hot. It worked well, it just meant that one of us had to stay on the relatively flat areas of gravel or trail.
Who is this little boy - he looks so grown up in this picture!
Scott and I were taking turns taking pictures with the boys and this nice couple offered to take our picture. They said they know how it is to get home and realize you didn't have any family pictures. The husband took the picture and the lady made funny noises to get the boys to look at the camera - how sweet was that!
He had so much fun climbing mountsins!
Karsten and I took this trail up 'the mountain'. From the bottom it looked fairly easy but as we got higher, the path got narrower and the brush got closer. I almost turned back because nature was just a BIT too close at that point, but Karsten wanted to keep going, so we did. When we got to the top, I was so glad we hadn't stopped - it was a beautiful view!
View from the top of our little hike. Since I didn't have on the appropriate hiking shoes (I wore sandles), we didn't climb around on top very much. I felt unstable on my feet and didn't want to fall or have Karsten loose his footing.
Karsten at a lookout point - almost at the top!
This was one of the rocks we could have climbed over to get a better look at that big rock. Maybe next time...
When we got back to the bottom, Karsten was getting tired so Scott carried him for a bit.
All the walking wore Liam out and he had a snooze as we walked back to the car.
This picture makes me laugh - Liam doesn't even know what we're doing and Karsten had no interest in having his picture taken.
We talked to one of the park guides and he encouraged we drive to the other side of the park and see the balancing rocks.
Liam was asleep in his carseat so I waited in the car with him while Karsten and Liam climbed up to see the balancing rocks. We scored a parking spot right across so I was able to get some pictures without leaving the car!
Pushing hard to hold up the rock!
He had a great time climbing over the rocks.
The drive through the park was beautiful!
These are the kissing camels rocks - do you see them?
