Each year, my mom and I take a day off and bake cookies all day. It's a fun tradition that we look forward to each year. We make butterscotch oatmeal, chocolate chip, white chocolate chip, cranberry white chocolate, peanut butter chocolate and gingersnap cookies.
This week, the boys had been super sleepy and occasionally complained of a headache or sore throat. We got lots of extra sleep and added all sorts of foods and essential oils that would help boost their immune system. On Friday morning, Liam woke up crying because his throat hurt so badly, and I knew it was strep.
All of this meant our cookie day was going to have a slight schedule change. I took Liam to the walk in hours at the doctor's office where she confirmed that he had strep, and since this was the third time in three months, she wanted to test the rest of us to see if we were carriers. She asked how Karsten was feeling and I said he had complained of a sore throat occasionally but didn't feel bad and had no other symptoms. She asked me to go get him from school and bring him in for a test.
SO, off we went back to get Karsten from school and go back to the doctor. We picked up Liam's medicine along the way and got the first dose in him. On the way back to the doctor, I realized I was low on gas...like 13 miles left. No lectures please, I don't typically let that happen, I just ran a bunch of errands that week and hadn't noticed my gas had gotten low. So, I'm frantically trying to think of the closest gas station to the doctor so we can still get back there quickly, and when I finally arrive, the gas pump won't work. SIGH. Finally, the second pump worked (albeit very slowly), so we were on our way after we got some gas. We made a quick stop in the parking lot to hand Liam off to my mom so he didn't have to go into the doctor's office again and catch some new germs (thanks mom!).
When we got back to the doctor, she confirmed that Karsten also had strep, in fact, his throat looked worse than Liams (I'm mom of the year for not noticing that). So, he was not going back to school, which meant both boys got to join my mom and I for cookie making. We stopped to get Karsten's medicine, then four hours after I first left our house in the morning, we arrived at my parent's house (normally a quick 20 minute drive).
Now, those of you who know me, know I'm a germo-phobe, so don't worry that the boys with strep throat were making cookies. They were ensconced in quilts laying on Grandma's sofa watching movies. They did sample several cookies, so it was a rough day for them. ;) I'm thankful this wasn't like our previous bouts with strep where they were nauseous and felt horrible, in this instance, their throats and sometimes headaches were the only things that seemed to bother them.
They got in a few games of Christmas checkers.
After that morning, I deserved a glass of wine with my cookies!
The house smelled delicious!
The assembly line for the peanut butter cookies, they have to be rolled in sugar before they go in the oven. The ones in the background are butterscotch oatmeal - yum!
A cookie sampler container for a friend!
Scott met us at my parents house for dinner, and after dinner we headed over to see the lights at a local petting zoo/farm. It was a nice end to the day!
