Lego Land

On Saturday, we checked out the new Lego Land here in KC.  Not to be confused with the new Lego store, which everyone is also excited about.

We went with Jenn and her family - here is David with Eden and Elam waiting to get in! We bought tickets online for the first appointment time when they opened and since we got there a bit early, we were some of the first people in.  It was nice to beat some of the crowds for the kids to play without competing for space with so many other kids!

The waiting area to get in was even fun - Karsten told us he was driving a ship here.

And they had a cute photo opp right before you went into the factory tour.  Of course, none of the kids wanted to look at the camera, there was too much else that was far more interesting!

In the Lego 'factory' tour, the kids got to turn the wheel to make the little plastic pellets into the machine that melts them to make legos.

They have a room that's full of KC landmarks made out of Legos - the buildings and landmarks were very impressive.  They said each landmark was created by a Lego master builder in California, then a box was built around the creation and it was shipped here to KC.  I wonder how many little Lego pieces fell off during shipping?

Liam enjoyed watching all the people and blinking lights in the displays

Karsten wanted to get closer so he could touch the train that was moving around one of the displays.

The Sprint Center and Union Station.  There was so much detail in each little display.

JC Nichols fountain on the Plaza.

Check out the detail on the Western Auto building - I love all of the ornate detail at the top of this building and the Lego version does not disappoint, it looks the exact same.

Silly me - I thought I could get Karsten to look at the camera when there were super cool Lego buildings EVERYWHERE.

There was even a Wizard of Oz scene where a Lego house spun in circles when you pushed a button.

Eden was thoughtful and made sure Liam was having a good time.

Next up was a small play area for the little ones.  They had these cool Lego animals the kids could sit on...well, they could sit on some of them.  We got scolded for putting Liam and Karsten on a big giraffe, but a worker encouraged Jenn to put her kids on a little giraffe.  We were a bit confused and there were no signs, so....

Everyone loves a slide!

This big pit of foam like Legos was a hit.  I took this picture and it was a bit like herding cats in trying to get all four kids to look at me.

Then I jumped around like a crazy woman behind Jenn making sounds and faces and the kids all looked at the camera - WIN!  Teamwork is apparently the key to good pictures (or making a fool of yourself) :)

Liam thought these blocks were pretty cool.

Karsten riding the giant giraffe.  Liam wasn't too into the giraffe - he wanted to stay in the Lego pit.

They had these big Duplo pools scattered about.  They held the little ones attention for a few minutes before they were off to find something more fun to do!

They had a short 4D movie and we all got to wear these super cool shades.  Karsten is making a funny face to keep the shades on his nose.  We weren't sure what they meant by 4D at the beginning of the movie, but then it got windy when a helicopter flew over and we got sprinkled with water from a fire hose.  It was pretty cool - Karsten laughed and laughed when he got wet from the water.  Liam was having a bottle and didn't share the same entertainment by the water because it woke him up.

They have this giant play area where kids can climb and run and build legos - and no adults are allowed inside.  Sounds heavenly for kids, right?  Karsten had a great time, every time we spotted him he was running back to the area where he could climb up and go down the slide again.  This was the only 'good' picture I was able to catch of him in the play area - the others were a blur, or through mesh or glass.  We had no clue how we were going to convince him to come out without being 'that' family with the screaming, inconsolable child.  We asked the gate guy (there was only one entrance/exit to the play area) how to get him out and when Karsten ran past, the guy said 'Hey Karsten, your turn is over, it's time to go'.  And without a single whine, Karsten walked out the gate.  I think Scott and I were in shock - that guy was GOOD!

Liam and I were hanging out while Karsten played.

I thought the Duplo blocks might be fun for Liam, but nah, he just wanted to put them in his mouth and that kind of grossed me out. :)

Elam thought Liam might like to play with that horse.

After the T Bones Mascot and Slugger, Karsten now thinks that all big characters are his friends and he loves to see them!  The Lego man was no exception.  Karsten held his hand and posed for a picture, then even gave the Lego guy a hug!

There was a cool ride where you got to shoot laser guns at bad guys. Karsten had a good time making shooting sounds, I'm not sure he ever mastered the actual shooting part.

Liam even got to ride, he just couldn't sit on Scott's lap so Scott got the challenging job of trying to hold Liam securely in the seat next to him.

They had a build your own car station, then you could try racing your car down a huge ramp.

And towards the end they had a pirate ship ride that went around and around and up and down.  Scott's not too into rides that go around and around, so Karsten and I went on this one.  You also had to pedal as you went around - that one was a bit tricky, I think I almost flung my shoe off a few dozen times while trying to pedal.  Note to self, next time wear tennis shoes.

At this station, you could build a Lego tower then when you pushed this button, the platform would shake and you could see how strong your tower was.

After a couple of house of playing, we were all ready for a good hand washing then our picnic lunch. An unsolicited piece of advice for Lego Land - if you're a kid centric facility, your bathroom facilities should be kid friendly.  I expected low sinks so kids could wash their hands, but nope.

I had grand plans of making these Lego cookies to have for dessert at our picnic.  Unfortunately, it turns out that it's hard to make square or rectangle cookies because they end up looking like big blobs.  SO, the Lego cookies turned into brightly frosted sugar cookies.  If anyone knows how to make square or rectangle cookies, I'm all ears!

We had planned to bring the kids bathing suits and let them play in the Crown Center fountains after lunch, but unfortunately, they changed the rules and people are no longer allowed to play in the fountains.  So, we decided to check out the free dinosaur exhibit instead.

There were lots of dinosaurs the kids could climb on.

This makes me laugh every time - Karsten didn't even see her do this, so he had no idea why I was cracking up.

Aww, how cute are they?

Attempted family picture with the big blue dino.

They had a play area with little dinosaurs that was a hit with Karsten and Elam.

Karsten particularly liked the biggest dino and didn't really want to share it with others.

And they had a dinosaur bone dig

And one last dino to pose on - complete with a forced, semi-pained smile.

After a long morning, Liam was worn out and ready to go home.  I think all of the adults felt the same way - but it was a fun morning!
