We managed to fit some sightseeing in before my conference began. The conference was at this beautiful hotel.
We walked around downtown Santa Barbara and saw these amazing statues, there were several of them that we didn't realize were statues until we had walked right past them. They were so lifelike!

There was even a baby doll on the bench next to this pair of statues.

We saw this building when we drove around and thought it was beautiful. When we were talking to a local, we discovered that it was their courthouse and the entire building is open to the public. You could even walk into any of the courtrooms in session as long as you sat quietly in the back.

This was one of the courtrooms. Can you believe this - it was beautiful!

The entire building was gorgeous!

You could go to the bell tower at the top of the courthouse - it had great views of Santa Barbara and the ocean.

I loved the iron work in the building. They had iron grates like this all over.

I wanted to take this light and door home with me. Scott said it wouldn't fit in my suitcase - he's so practical!

When we got back to the hotel we decided to check out the beach on the hotel property. We had read info that said there was naturally occurring tar that washed onto the beach and that it was really hard to get it off of your feet. We thought we would be fine as long as we didn't step on any of the tar on the beach.
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
We walked in the sand for a bit, then Scott realized his feet had tar on them. I checked mine out and the bottom of my feet were almost black. Scott had read something in our room about tar wipes that the front desk could bring if you got tar on your feet. The wipes were rough, almost like a fine grit sandpaper, and had something like baby oil on them. After a pile of tar wipes and lots of scrubbing, our feet were finally clean again.
We enjoyed strolling on the beach, but not the resulting tar aftermath. After that we enjoyed the beach from a distance. :)
