18 months

Time is flying faster and faster each month.  I look forward to the weekends with the boys; however, that means that weeks go too fast then all of a sudden, another month has passed.  I want time to slow down so I can enjoy these precious memories with the boys.

You might remember that at his 15 month checkup, I was concerned about his language skills (or lack thereof).  We worked with him being very intentional about vocalizing what we were doing and what objects we were seeing; however, we really didn't see much improvement.  He said "DAAAA" for everything and everyone, would sign 'more' and 'all done', say 'shhhh' for shoes and make a really odd sound for cookie. :)  I decided to trust my instinct and called Infant Toddler Services to schedule an appointment to have Liam evaluated - they came out and observed him interacting with us and Karsten.  At the end, they determined that he had great receptive skills and was understanding words, he was just struggling with speaking.  So, we qualify for speech therapy and will be working on that in the future.  More to come in the future!

It's been fun to watch Liam's personality develop recently:

  • He makes funny expressions when we tell him no, or when he thinks he's being funny.  He tilts his head down and looks up at us with big, not so innocent eyes.  It gets me every time - I have to try hard not to laugh.
  • He loves to be outside.  We have to make sure we don't say 'outside' if we're not prepared to put shoes on and go outside right then.
  • He wants to do things himself and will SHRIEK if he disagrees with you helping.  He's also mastered the throwing yourself on the floor move.  He also has quite the arm on him - many things have gone flying when we try to tell him no or redirect him.
  • He's mastering animal sounds - so far we have a sheep, a cat and a dinosaur (yup, a dinosaur).  The dinosaur sound is also used interchangeably with a lion or tiger.
  • He's really into a Melissa and Doug puzzle that has doors that open and magnets inside each door.  He'll be entertained sitting there and opening/closing doors and moving the magnets around.
  • He wants to do the same things that his big brother does.  When Karsten goes into the bathroom and climbs up on the stool to wash his hands, Liam is right behind him.
  • He enjoys having Karsten come in and wake him up in the morning.  They play games like throwing toys and blankets in and out of the crib or knocking Mario and Luigi onto the floor.
  • Each night when he's ready for bed and we've read our books, he sits up and yells 'DAAAA' because he wants Scott and Karsten to come give him hugs and kisses.  When they arrive, he opens his mouth wide to give baby kisses.  After kisses and hugs, he waves to them.
  • If anything moves outside while we are eating at the table, he stops everything, points and yells DAAA until we stop and look at the leaf, squirrel or bird that caught his attention.  Then, he might yell DAAA a few more times to make sure that we saw what he was talking about!
His check-up went well.  He's on track with where he should be with all of his motor skills.  His doctor was glad to hear that he would be getting speech therapy and thought it should quickly help him get caught up to where he should be.  As soon as we stepped into the elevator to go to his doctor's office, he started to cry.  Poor little guy remembered that he got a shot last time he came here.
  • The stats:
