1st Birthday Party

It's party day! I know it's cliche, but this year has flown by. I really can't believe he is one already.

In my planning, I had grand illusions of making Liam's birthday cake myself.  I had found an idea on Pinterest that looked simple enough for me to make.  Jenn took one look at the design and told me that it would make me crazy because there were all sorts of straight lines and I wouldn't have been happy if they were off.  Wise words - as I thought about it, I realized she was right.  SO, the lady that made Karsten's lego cake made this cake and it was delicious and looked great!

The gift table

Family picture before we ate - Liam kept trying to grab the stars off the cake and Karsten kept saying LIAM NO.

We had two kinds of chili for dinner - we had assumed it would be cold outside on November 10th, and since Liam loves Chili, it seemed like the perfect idea.  Surprisingly, it was 75 today.  SIGH.  SO, we had the air conditioner on and were serving piping hot chili.

Hello, birthday boy!

When Liam was done eating, he decided the garland on his banner was in his way so he kept trying to take it off. I was able to distract him so we would have it on his highchair for cake pictures.

Someone was ready to dig into the cake!

Ha - I have no words for this one.

Then we lit the candle and sang Happy Birthday.  Karsten was ready to assist to blow the candle out.

It seemed like a waste for him to smash that whole little cake and have most of it end up on the floor, so we gave him a smaller piece.

He took a few bites, but didn't go all out.

So I helped him smash his fingers into it to see if he would dig into it more.

Yummy cake!

Then he decided he needed to hold onto the balloon while eating his cake.

What a happy birthday boy! :)

After a quick cleanup and wardrobe change, he was ready to open presents.

Reading cards

Checking out his new chair from Grandma and Grandpa.

When he could see a toy but couldn't get into it because of the packaging, he would get frustrated and be ready to open something else.  This helped us keep the present opening moving quickly!

Grandma made him this beautiful rocking horse quilt to go with his rocking horse that my dad made him.

Aunt Kelli has a history of choosing great gifts that the boys want to take out of the boxes immediately.  This was no exception - Karsten wanted to play with this one as soon as he saw it!

While I was helping Liam open this present, I didn't notice that right next to us, Karsten was opening another one of Liam's presents.  Karsten excitedly presented it to Liam and said 'Look Liam, we got a ball!'

The obligatory family picture

The boys in their chairs from Grandma.  Liam thought he was big stuff sitting in his chair next to Karsten.

I thought maybe I could get a few pictures of Liam with the number one, but he was more interested in chewing on it and talking to Grandma.

We thought it would be fun to get a cousins picture - it was a good thought, but this was the best I got.

I got this cute picture of Trent and Taylor!

And we got a family picture.

Then Liam decided he was tuckered out and wanted to relax with Papa - he was more than happy to oblige.  It was a great day with fun had by all!
