We talked about the eye doctor with Karsten and told him what to expect. He was concerned that he was going to get a shot or have a nurse put a stick in his mouth (I think that strep test last winter left quite the impression). When we assured him that neither would happen, he was game.
He did a great job looking through the view finder and seeing the hot air balloons the nurse was showing him. Next, she tried to shine a light in his eye to check something but he kept blinking. I don't blame him, I always have trouble with that one. After that, we headed for the exam room where he was fascinated with the chair.
The nurse showed him some pictures and asked him if he could tell her what they were. They were like clip art and I thought they were difficult to discern. He was having trouble, so I asked her if I could do one to show him what she wanted him to do. She changed to letters and I read a line, then asked Karsten if he could read the line above it to her. He was spot on with all of the letter combinations she showed him - I think the pictures threw him when he couldn't tell what they were.
Next, the doctor came in and did some tests. She said that she looks for three things in kids - alignment, clarity and tracking. She wanted to make sure that his eyes were aligned with each other and tracked together, then she wanted to see how clearly he was seeing. She said that everything looked good and that his vision was 20/20.
He got a clean bill of vision health and got to choose a toy from her treasure chest on the way out. The bouncy ball and the cool chair were his favorite parts of going to the eye doctor!
