RIP Madison

Hard to believe it's already been a week since Scott and I had to make one of the toughest decisions ever.

On Wednesday evening, Madison started yelping in pain and turning around in circles like she was confused.  She had two to three episodes like this on Wednesday night and she just wasn't herself.  When she got up Thursday morning, she wouldn't walk so Scott carried her outside to go potty.  At first she wouldn't eat, but after some coaxing, she finally ate which meant she could have her insulin shot.  We were both really worried about her, so we decided that I would drop her off at the vet for observation while we were at work.  Thankfully our vet is amazing and when they got our frantic calls asking if she could come in, they said of coarse, bring her now!

She stayed with them on Thursday and had her blood sugar tested - we were hoping this was a diabetes complication that could be fixed with a different insulin dose.  They said she perked up a bit throughout the day and that her blood work was normal.  The vet wasn't sure what the problem was.

We feared the end was approaching; however, we decided that unless she was in pain like she was the night before, we would see how she did over the weekend while we were at Brett's wedding.  Later in the evening on Thursday, she started yelping again in pain.  :(  As much as we hated to admit it, we knew it was time.
With much heartache, we took her to the vet on Friday morning and had her put to sleep.

Madison was a great dog and we've been through so much with her.  She was our first dog and gave us practice being parents before the boys were born.  She had her share of health issues - two ACL replacements, recently diagnosed with diabetes, and a bevy of seasonal allergies. When we had Karsten, she looked at us like 'who the heck is this and when is he leaving', but she quickly grew to love him.  By the time Liam arrived, she had mellowed a lot and would tolerate a lot of not so gentle petting from Liam.  She loved the boys and would often sleep in their rooms.

We'll miss her so much.
