I dropped him off at Gail's on Monday morning and he was feeling fine and didn't have a fever. She texted me at 9:30am and told me he had a 102 temperature and had fallen asleep (which NEVER happens). I immediately packed up and headed over to pick him up - on the way, she texted me that he had gotten sick. Poor baby. When I got to Gail's, he was laying on the floor, obviously not feeling good. He started to cry when he saw me, telling me he had gotten sick and that his blankie was dirty.
We got to the car and I decided to call the doctor to see if nausea was common with hand, foot and mouth. I had read a bunch about it online and didn't remember seeing anything about upset tummies. We got home and I got his clothes changed into PJs and was going to put him into bed, but he didn't want to get in bed, he wanted me to lay on the floor with him. As soon as I laid him down, the nurse called me back. While I talked to her, Liam fell fast asleep.

The nurse thought that with how quickly his fever spiked, the nausea, and the fact that he occasionally said his throat hurt, he might have strep. She said to bring him right in, so we loaded up and headed to the doctor. When I was signing him in at the doctor, he was crying but I thought it was because he was upset about going to the doctor - nope, he apparently felt sick and vomited on himself, me and the blanket I had wrapped around him. The nurse that took us back was so helpful bringing me paper towels and trash bags to get us both cleaned up. I had almost put a change of clothes for him and extra shirt for me in the bag - guess I need to learn to listen to those instincts a bit better.
The verdict was strep, and he got an antibiotic shot so we didn't have to struggle to give him antibiotics twice a day (thank goodness!). He also got some medicine for nausea - whew!! We headed home and I thought he would want to take a nap, but he wanted me to stay close and watch tv together. The nausea med kicked in pretty quickly and did it's job, he was able to start drinking water and after a few hours he said he was hungry.

After a few crackers and some motrin, my happy boy was back.

Later, the motrin wore off and his temp came back making him feel bleh.

Scott stayed home with him the next day to make sure the fever was gone and that he was not contagious. When he woke up, he was feeling back to his old self and was going to enjoy his day with Scott.

They played lots of games together in the morning, and Liam took a good nap in the afternoon.

He went back to Gail's on Wednesday and seemed to be feeling good. When I picked him up in the afternoon, Gail had spotted some hand, foot and mouth sores on his feet. Sigh - we didn't escape it. Scott and I took turns staying home with him on Thursday and Friday. Luckily, he seemed to have gotten a mild case of it and never got a fever, just a few sores on his feet and hands that were a bit painful for him at times.
On Friday evening, he went outside to play in the backyard. I sprayed his arms and legs with bugspray and thought he would be fine. When he came back in about 15 minutes later, his face and neck were covered with swollen red welts. He had 13 or 14 bug bites all over his face and neck. I guess the bugs found the area that I hadn't sprayed with bug spray. :( Poor guy. We gave him some benedryl and slathered him with hydrocortisone. This is what the bites looked like the next morning, the benedryl was keeping the swelling in check, but this looked far worse than the hand, foot and mouth sores did!

Hopefully this rough start to cold and flu season is not an indicator of what's to come!
