I must be doing something fundamentally wrong that makes the dough too sticky because when we roll it to the appropriate thin sheet, it won't come off of the counter. So, we picked up the dough, floured it again and then rolled it out again.
We rolled it thicker the second time which allowed us to cut out the cookies. However, this made for super thick sugar cookies - think those thick lofthouse cookies.
We had the best luck with the star and flower shapes. The gingerbread man seemed to be too big and we weren't able to pick him up without breaking him. I know it's possible, because I remember eating a lot of sugar cookies in that shape when I was little! We WILL perfect this and have yummy, thin sugar cookies....sometime in the future, hopefully next year.
At this point, I think Scott was thinking 'I told you we should have gotten slice and bake cookies.' :)
Karsten and I made some puppy chow while the cookies were baking.
After a nap, it was time for frosting cookies. Bibs were required because you never know where frosting will end up. Karsten got to decorate a couple of cookies on his own.
Liam got to dip some cookie pieces into frosting - he was a fan!
Serious cookie business
Someone loves frosting!
Karsten's masterpieces
Stars and flowers - this was as red as I could get the frosting.
So, while a bit more successful than last year, we still have a long way to go before I can call our sugar cookies a success!
